Ted Everett - Virtual Business via Clarion and Internet Connect

The topic was Virtual Business via CWIC, but it was more of a case study of one person's attempt at learning CWIC. Ted Everett attempted to share his experiences of learning one of the latest TopSpeed tools, Clarion Internet Connect. The program he is developing is a conference traffic tool designed to organize online conferences by showing individuals who want to speak next in the conversation.

The concept of the session was good, but the presentation was a bit unpolished. Ted essentially diverged from the outline of his conference notes and opted for the ad-hoc approach to lecturing. The structure of the presentation was hard to follow, although Ted tried to keep it on track. It was clear that he put a great deal of time and energy into the presentation, but he is still a novice at the CWIC product and the Internet in general. This is often the case when delving into new technologies. Being a novice is not a problem, but it does hinder the teaching process somewhat.

Attendees of the session did get to see a "live" Internet application at work, and learned about non-persistent IP addresses. In addition, they got to see how easily a program can be web-enabled; turning a regular Clarion program into an Internet application.

An additional highlight, for those who stayed until the end, was Andy Stapleton's announcement about Internet servers that will host Clarion Internet applications. According to Andy, Troy Sorzano operates one such server and Andy will be initiating one in six months or so. For developers who may have shied away from creating and maintaining there own servers, he will set up a server for CW Internet executables.
