Bio: Juan Domingo Herrera

This week's INN Bio is our very first one from South America! Featuring a nice guy, he's not the loudest one on the newsgroups, but he's there, helping where he can. An avid programmer and devoted family man, he also has a passion for photos of his country -- he sent too many to include in the body of the article, but they were all wonderful, so don't forget to check out the thumbnails at the end of the interview.

Juan Domingo Herrera Who do you work for?
Right now I'm not working for a specific company, but my last employer was the Latin American representative of SoftVelocity and there I was doing support for the Clarion community and a lot of interesting things (big projects, research and new technologies).

Right now I'm trying to get into the third party business to bring a few interesting products to Clarion programmers. I hope this helps me and my partner to get in the right track to get our own company.

What do you like best about what you do now?
I like everything I do because programming is my hobby, so I enjoy almost everything I do, but my actual project includes a lot of research to integrate Clarion with other programming languages and that's something I really like.

Avenida de 9 Julio What has been one of your biggest challenges in using Clarion?
Understand the OOP in a Clarion way! No doubt. I did study and work with OOP under other programming languages, but to try to use it with Clarion, coming from Legacy, was a tremendous impact for me.... Right now I have no problem to work with ABC classes, but the first times were really hard.

What has been one of your biggest challenges in business?
I think that to try to be "up to date" with the new technologies as I want. Is really hard because every time there are some new technologies to study and so little time to learn.

Do you use any computer languages besides Clarion?
Yes I did programming in ASP, C, Assembler (Risc Micro Processors) and Perl.

Why? :) ASP was because every client want to have "other programmers" if they need to change something and as customer pays they are right :)

I did C and Perl because was the language prefered to do CGI programs a few years back for the Web in Unix OS.

The Assembler programming was in my "electronic" era, before I started programming with Clarion I did some digital designs and has to program the microprocessor and the PC software, for serial control.

When did you start using Clarion?
I started with Clarion 10 years back, more or less, and that was because I was doing Plaza de Mayo a software to control a digital sign (those that scroll horizontally words) over the RS232 port. My first attempt was with some version of Quick Basic but after spent almost 2 days to design a screen someone told me to try "something" called Clarion (2.1)......I fell in love immediately because of the easy programming, in that time there were some nice instructions (IN and OUT) to get out bits on the parallel and serial port, that made it really easy to program that initial software....

What's the coolest project(s) you've worked on using Clarion?
I have a client which uses some interesting structures and I do the software part. This system involves a lot of things, Caller ID, radio frequency decoding, send data over RF, send data over the Web with a dedicated point to point connection, etc. All this is done with Clarion and I'm very proud of that system because is not the standard POS system or administrative one. I could use a lot of my imagination designing that system...... that's the coolest..... isn't that hard to see it right? :)

Beautiful Marina What are your hobbies/what do you like to do when you're not using Clarion?
Pass time with my daughter and my wife..... that's what I love to do.... I wish the day have 100 hours to spend more time with them...... our baby child is the light of our souls. I like to do weights when I have the time. Travel in our car is also really something that I like to do with my wife and my baby child.

Juan and Marcela What is your wife's name?

Totally forgot to mention it right? :) Her name is Marcela. (She has a lot of names and last names..... do you want to know them? Ok, be ready. Her full name is: "Marcela Sol Alejandra Perez y Sanchez Shulman". Wow I almost didn't finish it!! :)

Married, children, grandchildren, other close family you want to mention?
Yes, I'm married, on January 5 we are going to have our first anniversary! Little Marina We also have a beautiful little baby called Marina who is the most impressive baby (at least for us!:)) She is a beauty, every morning wakes up with a beautiful smile on her face and that's the best gift for us every day. Also I can't forget about our she dog AVI..... yes is like the file extension..... when my wife find out what AVI means almost she killed me! It's a beautiful german shepherd of 6 years old and really good and a companion, she also comes with us to everywhere we go.

Where were you born?
I was born at Cordoba, Argentina, a beautiful place to live, with a lot of rivers and mountains and nice weather.

Where do you live now?

Puerto Madero: These pictures are from a port which was abandoned for a lot of years. A few years back someone rebuilt them and now is one of the hot places in town. Really nice place to go to some nice restaurants.

Teatro Colon (Colon Theater): This is the most important theater in the country. A recent investigation says that this theater has the best acoustics in theaters.
Teatro Colon Teatro Colon Teatro Colon Teatro Colon

Palacio de las Aguas (Waters palace): This building, in the middle of the city, is really impresive because in the beginnings of the city was the one to "dress" a really big tank of water for the city. Today that tank is not in use and the buidling is just an administrative place to pay your water bills :)
Palacio de las Aguas Palacio de las Aguas

Ferrocarril Mitre (Mitre Railroad Main Station): This is a place where the building is also impressive. The place is huge and old; from this place a lot of people go to their work every day.

Las Leñas: This is a ski center and people from a lot of places come here to ski every winter. This place was where we spent our honeymoon but in the middle of the summer :) So much cold doesn't like us. :)
Valle de Las Leñas Valle de Las Leñas

Congreso Congreso (Congress): This is our congress, a really nice building. It is also in the middle of the city and place of a lot of "quejas" (complaints).

Varios (others): A few pictures of other places of my country. In one of them you could see a weird thing: A roof street....kind of strange right? :)
